God Bless The U.S.A.

If you've been reading my last few blogs,it might have occurred to you that I'm a Canadian. You catch on quick.I happen to think that I live in the best country in the world, though it's a country not without it's faults.I may,or may not think that more at this time of year-Patriotic season. But it might also have occurred to you that, not being an American,I have a rather low opinion of America. And you would be very, very wrong.

A few centuries of sharing the same continent have made Canadians and Americans brothers. It is as simple as that. There is a considerable amount of history between our two countries, and not all of it is positive.Let me review it in very simplified fashion. After all I'm hardly a History professor.

A few hundred years ago Europeans, including the British were leaving for what was then called the New World.Well,at least it was new to those who didn't already live here.Evidently Britain wasn't the place to be,with the plague, and a huge fire in London that at least got rid of the plague, and kings getting beheaded and leaving a mess in the street,to say nothing of the social condition. And of course,no one was allowed to worship God in the way they saw fit.So they left for America, where things were different,or at least that was the theory. The French wound up in a substantial part of Canada,so,of course, they were still not free to worship the Lord in the way they chose, because, when the established church wasn't busy taming the savages that lived in the New World, they were not the least hesitant to tell people how to vote and otherwise live their lives.Under the British,Americans were doing a bit better, but not enough to prevent them from declaring independence from Mother Britain

That was more than 200 years ago and it worked out rather well for the Americans. They formed a true democracy, one nation under God and began to grow in power from then on.Meanwhile, Britain managed to evict the French from Canada,a fact that obviously didn't sit too well with the new American Nation, since they decided to go at it with Britain again in the War Of 1812,which,oddly enough occurred in 1812.It was a bad time for a bit and we were actually attacked by Americans, but in the end they turned back.Evidently we were not worth the effort as there were no good donuts here then, since Timmy's had not yet been invented.

A bit later the Americans had a war with themselves because all men didn't seem to have been created equal, like the American constitution said.It was a bad, tragic time and a lot of Americans were killed by other Americans. The experiment of American democracy nearly failed only about a hundred years after it began.

More wars arrived, including the two big ones, and America came in on the side of the allies in both wars. And if they had not,who knows what our world would look like now, especially in the second great war.Of course the war resulted in an increase in American power as the Americans took their place as the worlds leading nation. There were still some problems in America that took longer to solve than they should have. There was this guy named Jim Crow who was a bit of a jerk, and it took a while to kill him off,if indeed he really is dead.I think he is at least as dead as Elvis, though others may disagree.

More wars came.Vietnam,Iraq,a couple of times and a war against terrorism which I whole heartedly support,at least to the extent that the enemy is terrorists and not Muslims. That war really hasn't ended yet,so please remember to support and pray for our troops. That's about it for history.

Some of us in Canada view America as a sort of a big brother. It's great to have a brother for when things get rough. We don't always agree with our brother. Most brothers fight from time to time. But in the end, your brother is your brother. We live in relative safety because of the strength of our brother,so we need to support America, though we need not always agree with our brother.

So,on this,July 4th,from a Canadian to all America,let me say,God Bless The U.S.A.
